“Hydro Biofiler” team awarded top prize in the LocalTAU Pitch Competition, Miami, Florida

10-16.4.2019

LocalTAU (Miami, Florida) is an initiative of American Friends of Tel Aviv University.  Its goal is to “use Tel Aviv University innovation to solve problems starting in our own backyard”.   This year, LocalTAU inaugurated a Pitch Competition and invited teams affiliated with Tel Aviv Univeristy to pitch ideas to solve the following problem: “How can we treat stormwater runoff in a way that is sustainable (low-energy use) as well as cost-effective in a dense urban city adjacent to a sensitive aquatic ecosystem?”

The “Hydro Biofilter” proposal, a collaboration of the Center for Water Sensitive Cities in Israel and Tel Aviv University professor Dror Avisar, was selected as a competition finalist.   Dr. Yaron Zinger, director of the Center for Water Sensitive Cities in Israel, and Professor Avisar traveled to Miami to participate in a week-long program (10-16 April 2019) to pitch their solution to an audience of experts, stakeholders and residents of Miami.  The “Hydro Biofilter” team won first place, which includes $20,000 to begin researching and implementing its proposed solution.
